"Forged without Fire" is the tale of a young lady, Jallorie, who faces misfortune head-on and perseveres to become a heroic warrior. Through daring, Jallorie wins an apprenticeship with a powerful mage, Catlover, only to discover that she has scant talent for magic -- but the potential to become a talented swordswoman. Entering the army, Jallorie finds herself in charge of a small band of bowmen, the only hope of the northern farmers against a large band of raiders.
Pinson takes a slew of intense topics -- murder, sexism, corrupt officials -- yet avoids dropping the reader into despair or depression. This novel is enjoyable, lively, light hearted, and emotional. I particularly enjoyed the emotive responses, joy and rage and sorrow, portrayed through actions, which is so rare and wonderful to read. The sword, bow, and hand-to-hand fighting scenes are the best I've ever encountered, with vividly described combat instead of the typical glossed over blur; much like Louis Lamour's pugilism scenes.
"Forged without Fire" is an exciting new find and fantastic read. This novel will appeal to teens and adults who enjoy Patricia Briggs' books. This book pulls you into an interesting alternate world, full of magic and excitement and joy. It is well worth the price of a small publication. The first bit can be read on the publisher's web site (iUniverse).
