Never have I read a story that transports the reader into the mists of time in a way that feels as real as the sun rising this morning. Author Verda Smedley's years of research, including her own shamanic journeys into the timeless void, show in the details of life as she describes it. She documents plants that heal and support every aspect of life in ancient times, knowledge that is now circling back as we have the ability to search the internet for instructions in such lost arts. In addition to the wealth of information on healing practices, this book is about a shaman, Moon Dog, and his journeys to other worlds and other times in search of his beloved Gobetween, who was to be born into a time far in the future--our time. Along the way we have a fascinating look at societies organized far differently, with different perspectives, than the modern structures we take for granted. One is tempted to return.
The first half of the book reveals the perspective of the masculine, of Moon Dog in ancient times. The second half shows us Moon Dog's world from the feminine perspective of Gobetween, his beloved who joins him in his world, leaving her own. Smdeley's writing is lyrical enough to make you pause so that the words can wrap their magic around you. The love story is rich, sensual, honest and vulnerable. While reading Ancestral Airs, I felt myself between worlds, being touched and changed by the unfolding story and the characters brought so vividly alive.
